A shocking revelation has emerged about a government taskforce set up to tackle the soaring electricity costs and mounting arrears faced by households. This taskforce, designed to be a beacon of hope for struggling families, has met a mere three times since its inception, falling far short of its own mandated schedule.
The National Energy Affordability Taskforce, as it's officially known, was supposed to meet at least six times by now, according to its own terms of reference. But here's where it gets controversial: despite the urgency of the issue, and the growing number of households struggling to pay their energy bills, this taskforce has been anything but proactive.
The latest data on household arrears paints a bleak picture. According to the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), as of November last year, a staggering 303,465 domestic customers were behind on their electricity bills, and 173,845 were in arrears on their gas bills. These figures show no sign of improvement, with a slight increase in the size of those arrears.
Sinn Féin energy spokesman Pa Daly described the taskforce's performance as "shocking," accusing the government of employing yet another "deflection tactic." He likened the taskforce to a "smokescreen," suggesting that the government is merely going through the motions, pretending to take action on Ireland's extortionate energy costs without any real intention of bringing about meaningful change.
Minister for Climate, Energy, and the Environment Darragh O'Brien, in his response, acknowledged that the taskforce had indeed met only three times but highlighted the significant volume of work they had already undertaken. He mentioned the publication of the taskforce's first report in November 2025, which analyzed energy cost trends and proposed options for consideration as part of the Budget 2026 process.
However, Daly remains unconvinced, stating that the solutions to energy affordability are well-known and have been repeatedly raised by his party. He proposes the reintroduction of energy credits and enhanced powers for the regulator to tackle price gouging, among other measures. Daly emphasizes that Ireland's high energy prices are not an inevitability and that there are viable solutions. He criticizes the taskforce for being yet another talking shop that fails to meet regularly and, consequently, falls short of addressing the crisis.
The taskforce, which was established in June last year, comprises officials from various departments and energy-related organizations. Their terms of reference stipulated monthly meetings until the October budget and bi-monthly meetings thereafter, with additional meetings as necessary. However, records show that they met only in June, July, and October of the previous year, with no meetings since.
