The quake struck the Flores region at 5:58 am local time, with its epicenter located 68km north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province. This shallow quake was followed by two aftershocks, including a 6.1-magnitude tremor.
The impact was immediate and dramatic. Lukas Lotar, a hospital customer service official, described the scene: "Suddenly it started to shake and I panicked. Patients also fled the hospital, the jolt was big. I saw some walls were cracked."
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning, urging residents to stay clear of beaches and riverbanks. Director Wijayanto stated, "Tsunami modeling results indicate that this earthquake has the potential to generate a tsunami in the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and West Nusa Tenggara."
The alert was for waves ranging from 0.5 meters to 3 meters, and residents in Maumere, Flores Island, were seen evacuating to higher ground. The sea's recession, a common sign of an impending tsunami, was observed in the area.
Despite the severity of the quake and the tsunami warning, no immediate casualties have been reported. However, authorities have detected tsunami waves between 19 and 30 centimeters. Indonesia's location on the "Ring of Fire" makes it susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic activity, a constant reminder of the region's geological volatility.
